Portraits in Oil / Portrait Sketch
Commissioning a Portrait
I strive to create a likeness that captures the personality of each subject. I work from life and high-resolution digital photographs (5D, Mark II). Lighting is key, establishing mood and eliciting special qualities within the subject.
The first meeting involves a discussion of the overall feeling of the portrait, personality of subject and setting. We will review wardrobe, and lighting that are optimal. Reference photos are taken and I may sketch the subject. Photos will be reviewed with client for input and feedback.
A completed preliminary sketch will be done as the basis for the finished painting. The sketch provides an excellent idea of the composition, lighting and atmosphere of the portrait and will be shown to the client for their approval.
A completed painting will be done in my studio. Though portraits are completed primarily with photographic reference, I may request a live sitting.
When the portrait is finished I will send a photograph of the painting to the client for approval before shipping. Local clients (NY, NJ) may see the finished portrait in person. For clients within 100 miles of my studio I will deliver the painting myself.
I guarantee an exact likeness of the subject and will complete the painting in a style consistent with my work that the client has seen and approved. The highest grade professional materials are used in the creation of the painting ensuring durability and permanence under proper conditions.
